Sox Bullpen Blows it…Steelhead Drowns Sorrows

Cubs 4, Sox 3.  Final.  Up 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, I was feeling pretty good about a favorable outcome.  This good feeling was immediately erased by Octavio Dotel serving up back-to-back home runs to Derrick “I punch like a sissy” Lee and Aramis “I seem to always get shit lucky against the Sox” Ramirez

When the Sox survived the blitzkreig and headed to the 8th tied, things still looked rosy.  Perhaps the warmth inside me was prompted more by the world’s finest bourbon than the Sox being gritty enough to pull this game out.  Close games have not been friendly to the Go-Go’s this season, and when you leave 8 guys stranded on base, don’t expect to win.

I still expected a win, and Brian Anderson’s lead off double in the 9th solidifed that notion.  Little did I know, Jim Thome, Orlando Cabrera, and A.J. Pierzynski would go out with a whimper, leaving another baserunner picking his ass at second base.  Games like this are why God invented Rolaids, Maalox, and Tums.  I can’t take this suspense crap, and a pocket of ulcers began to form in my stomach during the break.

Mercifully, Scott Linebrink slung a meatball right away, and Ramirez crushed a 400 ft. dead center shot to end the game.  Too shocked and horrified to yell, curse, break something, or start throwing wild haymakers, I quietly went into the afternoon, like our Sox.

From a frustration standpoint, this game is an even 8.5 out of 10.  You knew the whole time the Sox had no business winning due to the large amount of runners LOB, but, around the 7th, a win seemed very plausible.  I feel bad for Johnny Danks.  The kid once again pitched his ass off, and the pen couldn’t secure a win.

The biggest no-show of the day was Joe Crede.  We need him to step it up tomorrow and Sunday, if we wanna salvage this series and take the next two.  “Tomorrow’s a new day.”  Indeed……..I’m off to happy hour, gotta get the salt out.
